News and Events

Ian has recently been diagnosed with Autoimmune Urticaria, making it impossible for him to attend SJS kids week. He is scheduled to attend the Boston Foundation for Sight in March 2012. In the meantime, Ian is back at school and enjoying being with friends again and we have begun fundraising for travel costs associated with his upcoming treatment. Meanwhile, our research for the treatment of Ocular Surface Disease continues. We are excited to announce that we are making progress in the design and development of a material that can be used to treat many diseases of the cornea, eliminate pain and restore vision. We will keep you up to date as new information becomes available.

About Us

Founded in April 2008, the Milne Stevens Johnson Syndrome Society is a registered non-profit organization based in Victoria, B.C. Canada. Our mission is to help 13 year old Ian Milne to preserve his vision, by facilitating ongoing access to state of the art medical treatment. This will involve a stringent adherence to treatment schedules and recommended protocols, including bi-annual travel to specialists in the United States at an approximate cost of $25,000 per year.

We recognize that knowledge is power, and as such, strive to build awareness and provide information or support to Stevens Johnson Syndrome patients and their families worldwide. In the long term our goal is to assist more SJS patients with funding for medical expenses.

We will achieve these goals by:

  1. Hosting fundraising events in order to provide financial assistance with medical costs which are not covered by government or private insurance programs. (see below)
  2. Promoting the sale of products or services, whereby a percentage of profits will be donated to the Milne Stevens Johnson Syndrome Society.
  3. Ensuring that 100% of donated funds will be used for Ian’s care costs.
  4. Collaborating with other SJS organizations and awareness programs regarding SJS and Ocular Surface Disease.
  5. Providing information which will enable SJS patients to contact dedicated support groups and/or network with other patients.

Costs not covered by insurance programs may include:

  • Boston Ocular Surface Prosthetic Lens fees or supplies.
  • Specialist treatments and surgical procedures in Canada or internationally.
  • Travel expenses for medical treatment.
  • Medications or supplies not available in Canada.
  • Prescription and non-prescription related medical fees and supplies.
  • Safety, adaptive, protective or academic devices as required.
